Safety

I was having dinner with my dad when someone I know stopped by the table. After finding out that my life involved moving to Africa, they looked at dad and asked “How do you feel about her going?”

And dad replied “Well, we’re obviously worried about her safety, but we can’t argue her reasons for going”.

My parents are Christians, and introduced us to Jesus early on in life. So, it is nice to be supported by them because they get it. But their concern for my safety is a concern that they share with almost everyone I know.

Dad shared with me that he views the difference between serving somewhere like Asia and serving in Africa is that in Asia, you have to be concerned about the government, whereas in Africa, it’s about being concerned with those people who have nothing to live for.

A few weeks ago, I signed paperwork that said I understand that cost, and that serving in this part of the world could result in the “ultimate cost”. That I will be living in a place where rebels, insurgents and terrorist live. That my family won’t sue should something happen to me. And that if I ever felt like I needed to leave, I could.

On paper, I am aware of the what could happen. On paper, it could be dangerous. But in my heart, of all the things I’m concerned about, my safety is not one of them.

I have a peace about this next step of faith. And the confidence that this is where I’m supposed to be. Philippians 4:7 says “The peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your mind in Christ.” If you’ve got me on your list of people to pray for, I ask that you also pray for those in my life to have peace about this. A peace that passes understanding.
